Theodore Stephens, lifelong resident, dies at 80
Theodore Stephens, a lifelong resident of the Chesterton area whose 80th birthday was celebrated this January, died at his home on Waverly road, (M.R. Box 19) on Thursday, April 16.
Services were at the First Methodist church at 3 p.m., Sunday, the Rev. Clair D. Siple officiating. Burial was in Chesterton cemetery, and the White Funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were six nephews, Oliver, Williams, and Arthur Sievert, Elmer Anderson, Jr., Leslie Anderson, and Marion Stephens.
Mr. Stephens was a retired bricklayer, and was born here Jan. 22, 1879, the son of Joseph and Louise Reick Stephens. On June 24, 1909, he was married to Mabel Elizabeth Anderson, who survives. The couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
He was a charter member of Local 6 of the Bricklayers union a member of the First Methodist church and its Men's club; and a member of the Duneland Historical society.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Kenneth and Robert, Chesterton; four daughters, Mrs. Jack (Jeannette) Myers, South Bend; Mrs. Earl (Lois) Hellman, Wellston, Mich.; Mrs. Robert (Marian) Shultz; and Mrs. Sylvester (Ruth) Kosmatka, both of Chesterton.
Also, 16 grandchildren; on great granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. John Sievert, Chesterton; and a brother, George Stephens, Escondido, Calif.
All his chinldren and their wives or husbands and families were here for the funeral and many other out of town rlaatives and friends, as follows: Mrs William Krause, Fish Creek, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Elliot Mills, Adrian, Mich.; Elmer Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Anderson, Jr., and Dennis, Homewood, Ill.
Also, Mr. and Mrs. William Lawrence and Shirley, Griffith; Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Anderson, Miller; Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Hepburn, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hepburn, Miss Dorothy Greenleaf, Mrs. Donald Meckstrof, Mr. and Mrs. John Connolly and son, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Sieverson, Misses Mabel and Anna Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. John Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fenton, all of Chicago.
