Sherry Lynn Strange killed in Michigan
A Porter girl was killed and three Chesterton youths were injured Saturday night in an auto accident near Three Oaks, Mich., just two-tenths of a mile from the Indiana state line. They were returning from a day of water skiing at the time of the 9:45 p.m. crash.
Dead is Sherry Lynn Strange, 16, 705 Michigami tr., Porter. Most seriously injured is Dan Luke, 18, 524 Dunewood dr., who suffered a broken leg, broken pelvis, and fractures of the shoulder and elbow. He is in St. Joseph hospital, South Bend, and is out of intensive care where he had been placed at first.
Also injured are Jeff Gebert, 19, Jackson township, and Phyllis Zosso, 16 Liberty township, both of whom are in Patwating Hospital, Niles, Mich. Dan was taken there, too, then transferred to St. Joseph’s. Jeff has cuts, bruises and a fractured hand, but is expected to be released today. Phyllis has cuts and bruises and is still undergoing x-ray examinations.
Benton Harbor state police are still investigating the accident. The reported Jeff was driving south on Hudson Lake rd. and came over the crest of a hill approaching a curve, when he lost control of the car, and ran off the road into a clump of trees.
Funeral Services
Funeral services for Sherry Lynn Strange will be tomorrow, 11: a.m. at Chesterton United Methodist church. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at the White Funeral home.
The Rev. L. Michael Wilson will officiate at the services, and burial will be in Chesterton cemetery.
Sherry would have been a junior at Chesterton High school this month, and was active in athletics and Girl Scouts.
She was born May 5, 1960, in Porter Memorial hospital, Valparaiso. Surviving are her parents, Mrs. Barney Tachala (Elizabeth M.) OF Porter and James R. Strange of LaPorte; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Stephens and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Strange, and her great grandmother Mrs. Ted Stephens (Mabel), all of Chesterton area.
Also surviving are three sisters, Shawn, Peggy and Colleen Strange of Porter; two brothers, Geno and Jay of Porter; a step brother Marce of South Holland, Ill.; and a step sister, Mrs. Jerry Jenkins (Kathy) of Ann Arbor, Mich.
